1045 Steel
Medium carbon steel used for shafts, bolts and gears. Yield tensile strength 450 MPa and Brinell hardness 170.
1215 Steel
A free machining grade chosen where cycle time and surface finish matter more than strength.
4130 Steel
Chromium molybdenum alloy steel used where strength to weight matters.
4140 Steel
A widely used alloy steel for shafts and highly stressed components, responsive to heat treatment.
4340 Steel
A nickel chromium molybdenum steel for high strength, high toughness applications.
A514 Steel
A quenched and tempered high strength structural plate steel.

Can you heat treat steel parts after machining?
Carburizing is one of our listed finishing processes, and hardness is verified with a micro-hardness tester in our inspection room.
What surface finish can grinding reach on steel?
As fine as Ra 0.2 micrometres, with dimensional tolerances of +/-0.002 inches.
Do you offer nickel plating?
Yes. Nickel plating, powder coating, carburizing and bead blasting are the finishing options listed for our steel machining service.
Which grade for a shaft?
1045 is the common choice for general shafts. Where the shaft is highly stressed, 4140 or 4340 with heat treatment is the better route.
