CNC Machining Finishes

Surface treatment modifies the surface of a substrate to form a layer with distinct mechanical, physical and chemical properties.

The primary objective of surface treatment is to enhance corrosion resistance, wear resistance, appearance or other specialised functional requirements. For metal machining parts, common methods include mechanical grinding, chemical treatment, surface heat treatment and spray surfacing.

The first step in any surface treatment is cleaning the workpiece surface, which involves deburring, de-oiling and descaling. A finish applied over a poorly cleaned part fails early no matter how good the coating is.

Finishes FAQ

Which finish should I choose?

It depends on the substrate and the job the finish has to do. Anodizing suits aluminium where hardness and corrosion resistance matter, powder coating suits steel sheet metal exposed to weather, and electroplating suits steel parts needing corrosion protection with a thin dimensional build up.

Can you match a colour?

Send a colour reference or a sample part. Anodized and powder coated colours are matched against your reference before the production lot is coated.

Do finishes affect part dimensions?

Yes. Plating and coating add thickness, and anodizing both consumes and adds material. Tell us the finish at quotation so tolerances are adjusted before machining, not after.

What if I need a finish not listed here?

Contact us. We will source the treatment and confirm whether it is compatible with your material and tolerance.
