Characteristics of CNC Turned Parts
The standard profile of a CNC turned part is symmetrical because it is rotated during shaping, which makes the process well suited to round or cylindrical parts. Some features can be asymmetric depending on the machinery and cutting tools available.
CNC turned components are formed from tubes or solid bars, though parts with very large or very small diameters may not be compatible with the process. Whether you need a custom prototype or a mass produced part, turning is a versatile process worth considering.
Operations for Producing CNC Turned Parts
| Operation | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Turning | The workpiece rotates while a single point cutting tool moves parallel to it and removes material from the side, producing features such as steps and chamfers. |
| Facing | The cutting tool removes a very thin layer of material to create a smooth surface finish. |
| Drilling | A drill bit cuts a hole along the axis of the workpiece. |
| Boring | A boring tool enlarges drilled holes or adds features such as steps and chamfers inside them. |
| Threading | A single point cutting tool forms threads on the outer surface of the workpiece. |
| Tapping | A tap cuts internal threads in the workpiece. |
CNC turning allows multiple operations to be combined to produce parts with complicated features. With live tooling, even more operations can be performed without moving the workpiece.

CNC Turned Parts FAQ
Which materials can be turned?
Aluminum, steel, stainless steel, titanium, brass and more. Free machining grades such as 12L14 and SUS303 turn faster and cost less per part.
Is turning cheaper than milling?
For round parts, usually yes, because material is removed quickly and cycle times are short. A prismatic part forced onto a lathe is not cheaper, which is why we look at the drawing before recommending a process.
Can you supply turned parts as a finished assembly component?
Yes. Turned parts can be milled, threaded, heat treated and plated in house before shipment.
